She's Got The Look: Happy Anniversary Q & L

It's not everyday you actually get to marry a friend, making today's post extra special to me. I went to college with this guy. After the miracle of a kidney donor, he got a second chance at life and didn't waste any time marrying the girl who stuck by him when his life, very well, could have been over. I am ever grateful they chose me to be apart of their day...then again they didn't have a choice. The year prior, he called me wanting me to come out to his birthday dinner so I could meet L. It was at that point, I knew, we were getting married. I made my declaration then and there, I get to do the wedding...and all parties agreed. Even after moving to DC, as you see, I kept my promise and they kept theirs.

One little secret, L, stopped half way down the aisle and sang a song to the man she loved. It completely surprised her groom and guests(that's what a planner can do for you). There wasn't a dry eye in the house. I still get chills!!!

Ambiance Answers: How Much Is Enough?

QUESTION:
My fiance and I are footing the bill for what will hopefully be our 2012 wedding. We have determined we have 6k to spend. Is it enough?

ANSWER: Maybe...definitely maybe! I am sure that wasn't the response you were expecting but it is the most accurate answer. The problem is not how much money you have to spend but how wisely you plan to spend it, and that depends on your style and your choices. If this is what you have to spend, your next step is to find the balance between your vision and your budget. Sometimes that balance can only be achieved by altering your vision and/or altering your budget.

A wedding of 125 people or less would be ideal for your price range, choose a DJ over a live band, try to come up with at least one non-floral design for half of your reception centerpieces, and don't provide alcohol. These suggestions should give you a great start.

On the other hand, if your guest list shows an invitation list of 200 people or more, you are sure to find obstacles waiting at every turn. Attempting to feed that many people will more than likely take up more than half of your budget; and a location to house them all, could cost more than half of what you have left. And you haven't gotten dressed yet. Again, in this scenario, it doesn't mean 6k isn't enough to pull it off but it may not match the vision of what you wanted.

It is enough money when you make your choices with your budget in mind. The key is keeping your vision in line with your budget. Consider this, a forty-five thousand dollar budget isn't enough to someone that has their heart set on a venue with a price tag of the same. You must keep your realistic vision in line with your budget in order to be successful.

Do your research, call around and check for prices to determine if it is enough money for the area in which you live. Or enlist the help of a planner, who can save you time and money by automatically eliminating choices that don't fit your budget. Be clear on what you are willing to splurge on and be firm on the things that you aren't. A clear vision, strategy and shopping around will best help you best maximize any budget you choose but only you can determine if 6k is enough to fund your dream wedding. Best of luck to you.

She's Got The Look: Inspiration Board-Brooke

On Monday, I shared with you my latest PROJECT. A few things have change since then. The wedding is no longer at home. Everything will take place at a local church courtyard. Needless to say, my gun guestbook idea is an automatic out, lol. Not everything from my presentation is pictured here but these are a few of the ideas I've pitched to the bride.

Colors: Green, Cream, and Khaki +Yellow

(to symbolize the groom's love of hunting and add a pop of color)

Bride Look: A blusher veil and colored shoes

I think these looks are perfect for this, police officer by day, second time around bride. These looks say here comes the bride while complimenting her kick ass attitude. I'm also suggesting blue toe nail polish to discreetly incorporate her something blue, should she choose. I think it would make for a memorable photo opt.

Finally, a Camouflage Garter Belt. A detail only this groom can truly appreciate.

Floral: It's a simple wedding that I feel needs a simple bouquet, something small but dainty and elegant. It's also the perfect time to add in some unexpected detail and personality. She could go with a rose bouquet but I just love this cluster of Billy Ball flowers. I'm also showing wrist corsages to show her she has options (not pictured). A tussy mussy would also be a great bouquet design option here because it could also serve as a keepsake from the wedding.

Details: Chalkboards. They are a super easy to design DIY project. I love the detail they'll add to this super small, super simple outdoor wedding for 11. No wedding should lack detail or personality, regardless to size or budget. The key is finding the right one for you. Don't you just love the chalkboard in lieu of a program?

Refreshments: I think a refreshment table is standard for any event. One 8ft table with khaki linen and cream overlays, lemonade stand, bottled water (custom labels if you'd like a little more detail), a top tier cake on a pedestal and/or cupcake tower, along with a favor would round this event out just nicely.

My Work Is Cut Out For Me

The man child has a 2hr delay for school this morning which has completely thrown my morning into a tailspin. Morning errands are complete and now I'm buckling down to tackle what's left of my exciting afternoon.

I have the pleasure of creating an inspiration board for a wedding with incredible labels. It is a second wedding for the bride, an at home wedding (abt 11ppl). and the groom is into hunting. Now how do you wrap all that up together in a bow for, let's say....about 4 weeks from now?

What initially comes to my mind?

1.Color Scheme: greens, creams, and browns/khaki's to incorporate the hunting, while keeping it dainty enough to be called a wedding.

2. Cake: a cupcake tower with top tier for cake, to keep cake costs in check.

3.Guest Book: I'll look into if there is a way to etch names or sign a gun to serve not only as a keepsake but a guest book as well.

Now of course all of this is subject to change. But I think this is where my inspiration for this wedding will begin? Check back on Wednesday for an update on how this inspiration board is shaping up. I should have some illustrations pulled together by then. Until then...

Ambiance Answers: Maid Of Honor Blues

QUESTION: So I'm getting married in June. I've picked out my bridesmaid dresses and just about everyone is excited about it! My two MOH cannot afford the bridesmaid dress. However, these two gals travel a lot and also have a job. I understand money problems, but if you're going to commit to being in a wedding, let alone Maids of honor, wouldn't you save for bridesmaid dresses? It isn't last minute either. I've been planning for over a year and these two women were aware that they were going to have to pay for bridesmaid dresses.

Advice on how I should handle this situation. I tried looking for other dresses but couldn't find ones that I liked and also they were from a sketchy website!

If you were in my shoes---- what would you do?! I cannot afford to pay for these ladies bridesmaid dresses and the wedding! THANK YOU!

ANSWER: I see tension rising on the front end of this situation. If no one is experiencing hardship, then the line has already been drawn. You won't do it intentionally, but you will cringe when you hear them mention spending money on something that you feel could have been saved for the wedding. And this will most likely continue for the duration of the planning process.

This is when you'll have to put on your big girl heels and ask. Are you financially able to be apart of this day or not? Never mind hair, make-up, jewelry, and shoes are still on the horizon. When the lines of communication are opened, you'll be able to decide if you are willing to help them be apart of your day or if you'll have to accept them not being able to afford your day and continue to move forward. More than likely, you don't want to strain your maids financially but you don't want to strain your friendship either. You're planning a wedding...frank questions are going to have to be ask.

I say, open up the lines of communication. Find out:

1. Are they financially able to be apart of your day?

2. If not, find out what they can afford. This way you can decide how much you'll need to fill in, should you choose to.

3. If not, and they would still like to be apart of your day, find them another role to play (like carrying your train or reading a poem)

It doesn't have to be all or nothing. But you will need to get to the bottom of it, so that you can move on. It'll be one less stress to have.

Experiencing the MLK Memorial

In light of the King weekend, my family and I decided to take advantage of a historic opportunity as a way to celebrate and pay tribute. Since we missed the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial dedication, due to the Mr being deployed), we definitely wanted to see the monument on it's first King Weekend.

The detail of his buttons and facial features are incredible. Truly a work of art! The backdrop to the monument is a wall displaying etched quotes from Martin. It was cold!!! I imagine nothing comparable to the conditions of the Civil Rights Era, so I didn't complain...but I didn't stay long either. LOL, thank you Martin!

Birthday Party Fit For A King

In the month we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Ambiance helped Mr. A. King celebrate his 40th birthday. Mr King wanted to recognize Dr King as apart of his celebration. So...to pay a little tribute to the Dr, we decided on a 1960's themed candy buffet and a photo collage wall (not shown below) of Dr King and his family, other accomplished African Americans of that time period, as well as, fun facts and trivia. A royal cake and ice sculpture were just the beginning. This party was a celebration of life and legacy.

I am drooling over the Winter edition of DIY Bride magazine, today's Friday Fave. It is too delicious! From favor treats to bridal slippers, centerpieces to oober cute seating charts...I'm in overload.

I must admit that even though I'm in the wedding industry, the price of wedding magazines really hurt my feelings sometimes. This little gem will run you about $8.99. It's worth every penny, if not for the crafty instructions, for the inspiration. It's magazine love!

If you see it in your local bookstore or news stand, do not pass it up. I'm already thinking of how to use these projects beyond weddings. Hey, a girl can never have too much inspiration.

You may not know that I am one of the presidents of my alumni chapter (The University of Memphis). Last Thursday, my Memphis Tigers played the Georgetown Hoyas here in DC. We had a fantastic pre-game reception at Dewar's Lounge in the Verizon Center. We enjoyed delicious sliders, nachos, and hot dogs with all the fixings. And then...surprise, in walks Congressman Steve Cohen. It was such a great opportunity for our alumni and supporters. It just goes to show you, you never know who you are going to meet.

Yes, for 7 years and there is no way I could do what I do with him.

What is the best piece of (marriage) advice you’d share?

I remember seeing a Dr. Phil episode; he was dealing with a couple using the others’ failures as an excuse to underperform in marriage. He told them “marriage isn’t 50-50, it’s 100-100. It has been a reminder that I can’t base my choices and actions on my husbands moods, actions, etc. I am responsible for delivering the very best I have to give, regardless. It has translated well into other relationships and interactions as well…good stuff!

Tell me the best thing about your job?

Oh man, that’s a tough one…if I had to pick one thing, it would be that I am constantly showing people they are much stronger, physically and mentally, than they think they are. I see them leave a session with just a little more swagger; a little more belief in their own selves and I love being apart of it.

What is the biggest mistake you see Bride-to-be’s make regarding nutrition and fitness?

Oh you are pulling my heartstrings now. I call it Bride-o-rexia. They starve themselves for their entire wedding process. They are unhappy, unable to think, and often winging a BIG metabolic boomerang that’s gonna come back and smack them right between the eyes as soon as they say their I Do’s. It is bad timing, usually not long after that, they want to start having babies, and then they continue to remain behind the eight ball.

I understand wanting to look your very best on the big day, but there is no reason a bride cant reach her goals if she enlists the right guidance/support. I want to help them get there happily and healthily. Brides should enjoy that special lead up time, because they CANT get it back or prepare to live their best life as they go forward. They need a sustainable plan for their new life. We can help.

What are 3 Nutritional/Fitness Do’s?

*DO EAT! Often, well, and enough to fuel the work you do.

*DO strength training. Lean muscle is like a little calorie pacman in your body, for this reason and so many others, you need to build and maintain it.

*DO make exercise a non-negotiable part of your body hygiene. You wouldn’t skip brushing your teeth because you didn’t feel like it, would you? Find a partner, a friend, a coworker, a spouse, your child, or (hint hint) a Trainer if you need someone to hold you accountable. Stop letting yourself off the hook. It matters.

What are 3 things to avoid?

*DON’T lock into a consistent group exercise schedule. As fun, social, and routine as that can be, that kind of repetition isn’t good for your metabolism. Mix it up! Try new methods. Take it outside, read up-there’s a whole world of choices. We all have our faves, but they can be dangerous if we are TOO consistent.

*DON’T be intimidated. A lot of folks feel like they have to be fit to start going to the gym or working with a trainer. The right place/partner will welcome you and help create a non-judgmental, goal focused environment where you can be successful.

*DON’T believe the hype. Fad diets are just that-fads. I don’t care which celebrity is endorsing them. Nutrition is a science, and it’s been around a long time. True there have been “breakthroughs” but very few are sold in boxes, or work in “3 days or less!!!” Be a student and an advocate for you health and well being. Talk to someone who has a solid foundation and can truly help you, then do the work. You are worth it.

What is your most favorite thing to eat and/or cheap treat?

ICE CREAM! No contest; preferably involving peanut butter of some kind. And hey, then it’s got protein so…it’s practically health food, right?

Winter Party Planning: Holiday Favor Bags

This weekend, I had the pleasure to hammering out the final details for the man child's classroom winter party. As many of you know, the man child has several food allergies. I'm always looking for ways to avoid food at parties but I am also a sucker for treat/favor bags. I think they complete a celebration. After, careful consideration, I decided to break the decorate a sugar cookie craft and substitute a take home treat bag. I'm thinking hot chocolate, candy canes, and Hershey kisses for each student. And since I can't seem to do anything simple, I've been racking my brain for how to package/present them.

Thank goodness for technology. I stumbled upon these adorable treat bags from Ametheystcat Designs, that have the exact contents for what I'm looking to package. How lucky am I? Sweet and simple! I just love how you can give a paper bag personality.

Some friends of mine will begin planning their journey to happily ever after, in about another year. A conversation over the weekend lead to an interesting discovery, the bride-to-be is stressed out already, lol. Go figure, right? She shared she has been watching the wedding show Bridezilla. She further explained how she doesn't want to be a Bridezilla or have any parts of what they deal with. She started making a few research calls this past week and has declared she is over the planning process already. She now just wants to know what time to show up...in 2013.

Conquering Virginia: Feet To Pavement

I took the time to do something I haven't done in a long time...promote my business myself. I armed myself with tons of business card and postcards and hit the streets. And boy am I tired!!! This helped me realize that I really need to get back to fundamental basics. No one and nothing can promote my business better than I can.

Although I don't feel like anyone I met today was overly receptive (lol), it was a great eye opening experience. And I have committed (to myself) to beating the streets at least bi-weekly. Best of all, it's all been FREE!

Decorating on a Dime: 5 Bucks or Less

I felt my front porch needed a little something for Fall. After all, an event coordinator lives here, right? I thought frugal would be the best way to go. I scooped these adorable yard scarecrows at the Dollar Tree for none other than a buck a piece and the pumpkin for $2.50 from the pumpkin patch at the man child's school. I managed to not only decorated my front steps but help a school at the same time; all for less than $5. I'm pretty good, dont you think, lol?

When decorating your home for Fall, remember, you don't have to spend big to make a statement. Stay tuned for more decor tips and inexpensive designs for Fall and Halloween.

It is time to start making our to-do list and day of timeline for a Fall Fantasy Costume Party we are coordinating. I thought it would also be a great time to share one of my fall/halloween decorating tips with you.

Halloween Décor Tip # 102179
Wooden Letters are your friend. They are one of the most versatile decorations around. They are easy to find and inexpensive. Best of all, you can spray paint them any color! You can lay them flat, stand them up, or attach them to the wall. Spell out Scary, Boo, Halloween, or Trick or Treat. Use your customized phrase on your mantle, party treat/buffet table, or window sills. Time is money and this décor trick will luckily save you both.

I'm working on a few for the costume party. I had some extra black paint, so I'm painting over spray painting this time. I still plan to paint the insides but all in all, I am pleased with the way they are shaping up. I think these will go on our "No Tricks, Just Treats" Dessert Buffet. What do you think?

New Meeting Facility in PWC

It appears Prince William County will be home to a new five story, 125 room Hilton Hotel. The hotel will be across Telegraph Road from the Holiday Inn Express. The new hotel is supposed to house a meeting room for up to 85 people and an indoor saline pool. A public rezoning hearing was held last month, no word on groundbreaking plans just yet.

Tradition is deeply rooted in many of our wedding practices. However, many of these traditions have couple’s throwing valuable dollars away in the name of love. If you are looking for a few good tips to further cut costs or rescue your ailing budget, consider some un-conventional methods that kick tradition right in the teeth but may bring your budget back within reach.
1. Forget Favors- favors are a nice gesture of appreciation but certainly not mandatory. Remember, guests are not attending for the parting gifts; they are coming to celebrate with you. Treat your guests to a better overall experience by forgetting the favors all together and using those funds toward another area of your day like food or venue.
2. Bye-Bye Boutonniere’s- this is not the prom, there is no need for everyone to have a boutonniere or corsage. Groomsmen, ushers, and hostesses are special to your day because they play an active part, not because they are marked by a rosebud. Make the cut to just the groom and parent(s) and you could save big. Boutonniere’s and corsages average $9.95-$15 depending on your vendor and flower of choice, so consider alternatives like pocket squares for the fellas.
3. Skip Shoe Rentals- guys ordering tux’s tend to tact on the shoes package out of habit or because the bride-to-be wants everything and everyone to match. There is no need to rent shoes unless you do not have your own coordinating shoes. So, if you can, skip the add-on and pocket the $20-$25. Your wedding party will appreciate the savings too.
4. Pass On Programs- although a wedding staple, programs can be considered an optional expense. Remember, extra paper needs mean extra paper costs, taking away from your stationary budget (4%). If you can not bear to live without programs all together, consider printing 1 per couple/family instead of 1 per person.
5. Waive Wedding Party Gifts- tokens for your wedding party members are a nice gesture but an optional expense to you. Engraved flasks, glasses, jewelry and manicures add up fast, especially with a large wedding party. Gifts are typically allotted 3% of your wedding budget. Consider writing each person a letter telling them how valuable they are to you and your day. It is not only free but priceless.
6. Say No To the Limo- the way limo packages are designed (6-8hr blocks), they are often waiting outside more than they actually transporting you. Ask about a limo taxi service where they will pick up and drop off for a flat fee or consider renting a nice car for the weekend. Airport locations often have luxury collections in which a variety of Mercedes, Cadillac’s, Convertibles and Infiniti’s may be available.
7. Borrow It- if you are not the sentimental type borrow instead of buying things like the ring bearer’s pillow or cake cutter from a newlywed couple or use it as a way to honor your parents on your special day.
8. Nix Personalized Napkins- although a darling and personal touch, they will all just end up in the trash. Save yourself, $50-$100, according to the size of your wedding.
9. Keep Your Wedding Party Small- the more attendants you choose, the more bouquets you buy. And floral expenses can be deal breakers to your budget. Try to choose 4 people or less to keep your costs low. A modest bridesmaid bouquet can range $35-$55.
10. Time Is Money- a good and realistic timeline for your wedding day is key. Starting late and not allotting enough time for set-up, pictures, or break-down will cost you. To avoid additional hourly fees from your facility and/or photographer, make a solid timeline and share it with your wedding party so that everyone is on the same page.

In House Project

We've moved into the new house but my office still needs work. So, I've decided I will create an exsisting look for less. Why not? It's kind of the same thing we do with events. You pick it out of a magazine and we find a way to give you the look at a price you can afford. Amazing, how I find time to challenge myself, isn't it?

Here's what's happening. This is an organizational system from Pottery Barn. I'm pretty sure it's called the daily board and costs a whopping $350 (depending on all the pieces you choose). My plan is to frugal find at my local thrift store, salvation army, etc to recreate this look for less. Ready, Set, Go!

Wish me luck. I'll be posting my progress throughout the week. I'm excited...a new project.

On To A New Article...I Hope.

Today I'm keeping it light, had a busy morning. So it's time to get started on a new wedding article. I've been hammering out the details so far but I've just hit the wall. I'm writing about 10 useful ways to save and I've got 9. LOL, 9!!! I am just going to have to walk away from the article until I think of the perfect 10th one.

It's so funny. This process seems to be so much easier when I'm working with a client. Offering suggestions comes so easily during the planning process, partially because each suggestion is unique to the clients situation. But to just sit down and write out 10 tips that almost anyone could use, in any situation, is a bit more challenging; and more so because I, apparently, only have 9 ideas on the subject.

So I'm signing off for the day, until I get my light bulb moment. Smooches!

Inspiration: Rock Glamour Girl Birthday Party

Today's blog is especially for my good friend Kristen. Her daughter's birthday is coming up. This year the little princess (whose not so little anymore) would like a Rocker Girl Glam party. Knowing that mom has a blank stare on this one, I've decided to take the challenge and at least share a few thing one could do. Keep in mind, with a party theme like this one, rocker and glam are going to be according the birthday girls definition. And if you are a parent, you'll know your kids just so happen to be very particular people, to be jobless.

COLOR SCHEME:

Black, White, and Pink Or Lime Or Purple Or Teal

And I've seen Damask styled invitations at the Dollar Tree before.

DECORATIONS:

If it's going to be a simple party at home or a location in which you can add your own touches, consider a wall of fame. Fill one wall with old records (or Cd's if records are too ancient), it also makes a great backdrop for pictures. Be sure to check your local thrift and/or Goodwill stores for the best deal on old records.

You use records and/or Cd's to hang from the ceiling. You can choose to suspend them all over the room or just over the dining area. For a really cool look, use invisible thread.

FAVORS:

For a party this custom, no run of the mill goodie bag will do. Why not customizing a CD with all the birthday girls favorite rockin' tunes? It is personalized and functional. And sure to be a gift your guests won't soon forget.

LET THEM EAT CAKE:

A custom cake can not only be dessert but a great decoration as well.

ACTIVITIES/OTHER SUGGESTIONS:

*Feather Boa's & Sunglasses are always fun and festive

*If it's an over-the-top party do hire a karaoke company (age appropriate songs of course)

*For an at home or smaller setting, do karaoke on the wii

(make sure you break into teams and have enough wii remotes and batteries)

*Hire someone to give guests guitar lessons

Start with these things to find out what the party theme means to your party host/ess. There are tons of other fun directions, twists, and turns you can take to make sure it's the right rock and right glam for your birthday guy or gal.

Here's another inexpensive Halloween treat I just love. It's really easy...once you find enough sticks. I recommend starting this project a little early, unless your yard is overflowing with tree branches. When I made these a few years back, I ended up having to scout around my sister's apartment complex because my neighborhood just didn't have any the right size. They're free if you are willing to take a walk after dinner. And well worth it, I must say, they were a huge hit!

I am still beaming at having an article published in the Fall edition of A Bridal Experience Magazine. I've written a few articles during my time in Germany, so I've been published before. But this...this is my first industry related article since I've opened Ambiance and it just warms my heart. So watch out, proud planner coming through! As you can see, I'd rather be doing anything other than what I'm supposed to be doing, since I have time to take self-portraits with my cell phone. Halloween Party Inspiration

I realized today that I've got to get busy with my inspiration board for a child friendly "Not-So Spooky" Halloween Spectacular. I must share the only reason I'm having a party for the man-child is because I got tons of things on clearance last year, so I must put them to good use. Plus with his allergies, trick-or-treating is useless. I stumbled upon these beauties thumbing through a magazine at the doctor's office. Lucky Me = Lucky You!

Not only are these adorable, they're SUPER easy to make. You simply wrap lollipops in paper towels or napkins and tie with white yarn. Then it hits me, why buy anything else for your trick-or-treater's. A big bag of lollipops and a little time...you give a creative treat but you haven't spent a ton of money. It's genius and totally what I will be doing this year; for the party and for trick-or-treater's.

P.S. The man child's class may get these if they request treats for Halloween. Lollipops for everyone (laughing my evil laugh).

Saw a little girl in Target with this t-shirt on and thought it was darling. In a very non-stalkerish way, I ask her mom if I could take a picture of it to share with all of you. She was also kind enough to give me the skinny on the story behind the shirt. Here goes...

Since settling on the house in VA, I've become Mrs Fix-It. Seems like I'm redecorating the entire house and never mind the fixing & tinkering required on a foreclosed home. Needless to say, I've been at Lowe's a LOT!!!

I'm super excited to shout out one of my favorite Ambiance couples, R & J. In 2006, we pulled off a surprise wedding in the middle of their family reunion, managed to whip together an artsy and eclectic all white cocktail party the following day for their closest friends; turning it into a wedding weekend I'll never forget.

Busy Week

Glad to be so busy this week. Looking foward to consults for a Tinkerbell inspired birthday party and a Friday consult about a retirement party. I'm looking foward to presenting my ideas.

In the meantime, here are a few things to remember when planning a retirement party:

Consider the retirees profession and/orpersonal interests for theme and decor inspiration
Make sure the party is geared towards retirees likes/dislikes. You don't want to plan dinner and dancing for someone that doesn't dance.
Keep it short and simple. 1-2 hours should be plenty. Remember, it's a friendly fairwell not a wedding reception.

Conquering Virginia: Stonewall Golf Club Luncheon

I'm super excited today. Audrey from Old Hickory Golf Club, passed along some information to me about a Women's Wedding Network Luncheon. I called yesterday and was still able to get a spot for today's meeting. So needless to say, I'll be lunching with the ladies of VA's wedding world today at the Stonewall Golf Club. I'm looking forward to meeting and networking with the ladies, as well as, learning about customer service and retention.

Ambiance Day at the Movies

Had a friend call me and ask if I was playing hokey, because she saw I was going to the movies on Facebook. After I literally laughed out loud, I replied, "When it's a wedding movie it's not hokey, it's work!".

Don't you just love my job? Went out this morning with the intention of catching Jumping the Broom and Something Borrowed, both new at theaters today. Unfortunately, my movie theater had other plans. The time for the shows just wouldn't line up with my man child getting out of school. So I had to choose.

Jumping the Broom won, as it played the earliest. I loved it but then again, I'm a romantic! So although it was predictable at every turn...it's still a wedding, and a couple sorting through learning how to love each other. There are a few lessons that young couples can take from the movie; lessons on dealing with family, as well as, the history behind the movie's title. Without giving away too many details you can expect quite a few laughs and a cloud like feeling when leaving the theater.

After the movie, I did play hokey for the rest of the day, lol. TGIF!

Baby Gift Blues

I am in a real pickle. I have some former clients (8.8.08) that have celebrated the birth of their first child (months ago) and I want to send them a gift.I normally do pretty good with choosing gifts for things like Baby Showers, etc. But what do you send the child that you KNOW already has everything? I know it will be the thought that counts, but nothing just seems good enough.

My baby shower go-to gift is usually a piggy bank. I go ahead add my own monetary contribution to the bank. Parents-to-be normally love the thought and practicality of the gift. But this one...I don't know. Wonder if he already has one. I just hate ruining the surprise by telling or having to ask first, but sometimes it's necessary. This whole situation has inspired today's blog. Here are few tips to help guide you in the right directions when choosing the perfect baby gift.

1. Ask yourself, when do you need the gift?
You'll have to consider if you will be gifting for a shower (before baby is born) or if baby is already here and you are just sending a token of Congratulations? The timing of the gift may change your options a bit.

2. Are the new parents registered?
Many times this will take the guess work out of what they would like their bundle of joy to have. Remember, don't feel like you have to create more work for yourself by finding something aside from their registry. They take the time to create the registry for a reason, use it as a guideline.

3. Fun or Functional...What kind of gift do you want to give?
Asking youself if you want to focus on a fun gift verses a functional one helps guide you in the right direction when you are ready to shop. If you focus on fun, you can steer clear of bottles, bibs, and diapers. However, if you want a gift that parents will put to good use day in and day out, functional is for you. Here are a few gift ideas:

The Military ID- research your local vendors to find out who offers or is willing to offer you a military discount. This is a great tip whether you, your fiance, or parent(s) paying for the celebration are the service member. Saving 10% with each vendor can make a huge difference in preserving your budget. Lastly, don't forget to see if you live in a state that offers a military discount on your marriage license. Remember, every little bit helps.

On-Post Services- if you live near post/base, consider checking with ITT for assistance arranging travel and/or transportation for a large wedding party. Find out if any facilities on post are available for hosting private events. Check in with MWR or the USO to learn more about upcoming bridal shows and other wedding related special events planned for post. Finally, consider AAFEES/PX/NEX for your tax free jewelry options, wedding bands or engagement rings.

Planning Tip #5642- Break In Your Shoes!

This advice just isn't for brides. When you buy new shoes for an event, do not wait until the day-of to put them on your feet. Yes they feel super comfortable on the cat walk in front of your mirror, but how will they feel 6 hours into your special occasion?

This doesn't mean you have to cut the grass in them. Wearing new shoes for about 10-15 minutes a day, while doing your normal house routine, is enough to do the trick. Believe me, you'll thank me later. The more time you have to break them in, the better. When it's showtime, you'll have no worries because they'll still look brand new.

Conquering Virginia: Old Hickory Golf Club

Had a great meeting this morning with the Old Hickory Golf Club despite the wind and rain. Audrey was most friendly and helpful with sharing what she knows about the area, as well as, their facility. I love that they have a built in Plan B for outdoor ceremonies that doesn't compromise the reception reveal. It's definitely a space I'd love the opportunity to work in. It felt good showing my portfolio and exchanging business cards.

Conquering Virgina: The "O" Club

I've opened a second office in the DMV (DC, Virginia, & Maryland) and now I have all new places to see, vendors to meet, and cake to taste. It's exciting and overwhelming in the same breath. I figure the best way to tackle this massive 3-in-1 state is to take it one side at a time. So journey with me as Ambiance sets out to conquer Northern Virginia.

Today, a meeting at The "O" Club at Ft. Belvoir. They have a ballroom with an incredible view of the Potomac River. My goal is to meet, greet the facility staff and find out their policies for special events, as well as, how they recommend vendors for their facility.

I'm looking forward to it. Gotta run!

5 Ways to Whip Any Guest List Into Shape

The guest list is one of the most important elements to any event. It is imperative to have a solid guest list before choosing any additional elements to your event. However, the job does not end with how many people you plan to invite, it is equally important to know how many people you are expecting to attend. No matter how big or small the event, knowing how many people you are expecting makes all the difference with food, favors, venue selection, rentals and more. Here are 5 helpful ways to tackle these twisted sisters with ease.

1. Categorize. When drafting your guest list, break it down into the following parts:
*Those that must be invited.
*Those that should be invited.
*Those it would be nice to invite.

Should your list need to be cut or altered in any way due to space accommodations or budget, you will know where to start.

2. Consult All Involved. If you are planning a wedding, be sure to include your fiance, parents, and sometimes even grandparents to make sure you are not forgetting anyone that must be invited. If planning an event for someone else (ie: bridal or baby shower), it may be helpful to consult the honored party and even their siblings or parents to make sure you don't leave any key players out of the celebration.

3. Dig A Little Deeper. Ask yourself, do our guest have children? Spouses? Also, consider if single guests may bring a date/friend? Digging a little deeper will go a long way in tallying a more accurate number for expected attendees, as well as, keep you from feeling overwhelmed at seemingly ballooned guest list come RSVP time.

4. No Blanket Invites. When space and/or funds are limited, make sure you do not plan to put out any blanket invitations. Posting an announcement in your church or on your job, is a sure fire way to lose accuracy and control of your guest count when you do not know who will accept and/or decline.

5. Never Assume. Never assume what guests should already know... that their 4 children should not attend the baby shower too...that Aunt Mable knows the invitation you sent to her does not apply to Cousin Ray, who lives just down the street. The responsibility is yours to communicate any event stipulations. Try to do so while maintaining a celebratory tone (consider careful wording on your invite or pre-filled numbers on an RSVP card).

Lastly, you want to make sure you do not assume which guests will not attend from the start and over invite. You may find yourself surprised at who will choose to make your celebration a priority. Over inviting can lead to a cramped venue and an unexpected dent in your budget.

Maintaing a good guest list and guest count can help keep stress levels down and your budget in tact.

60 Years of Marriage

I met a couple today at Panera that have been married 60 years. I was floored. They said they go to Panera for breakfast every morning. If you've been in before and you sit down to eat, one of them is coming over to say Good Morning. It is actually how we started talking. We've spoken before but today, we were sitting close enough to chat. We made small talk about the weather and when she mentioned they had been married for 60 years, my jaw dropped.

Having only been married 9 years, this May, I too have my own ritual. I always ask couples that have been married longer than my husband and I for one piece of advice. Today was no different and she was happy to share. She said, "Life is meant to be hard. It is also meant to be good. Marriage can get tough but it also makes you tougher."

Wow, right? Don't you just love it? ! It is so true. Although it is something we already know, I just love the way she phrased it. I will cherish that piece of info, as I do all the advice tidbits we've picked up along the way. I just hope I can remember it ON the tough days, lol.

You can find a ton of resources detailing every move to make and question to ask for planning your wedding. However, you will rarely find information on what will shock you about the planning process. I've decided to take a stroll off the beaten path and shed light on what you should prepare for. A bride-to-be's stress usually has nothing to do with colors, cake design, or catering...it's the stuff she didn't see coming. Read on and remember.

1. Everything will cost more than you think it should or could.

2. Your Parents/Grandparents have a guest list of their own. Make sure to include them when gathering your numbers for the rough draft of the guest list.

3. More Expensive Doesn't Mean Better. When choosing who you think the "best" vendors are for your day, consider more than just price. The more money you pay doesn't always mean the better the service or the higher the quality. Sometimes it just means you paid more. Always find out what all is included in the services you are seeking and weigh your options based on your value of the quality, style, service, etc.

4. Do-It-Yourself projects are not always your most cost effective option.

5. If they pay, they have a say! You aren't the only one with a vision for your wedding day. If someone else is picking up the tab or you've arranged to share the cost of the big event, be prepared to compromise.

Had a great questions on an Ambiance Answers session yesterday. The bride-to-be was looking for photo or post cards for .50/cent or less. That seems like it would present a great challenge but the deals are out there. So here are 5 ways, I say, you can personalize your stationary for less:

5. Talk with a staionary/invitation designer. You'd be suprised at how inexpensive customizing can be. If you are looking for something simple, believe it or not...custom jobs are not always over-the-top custom prices. You just might create something that reflects your personality and style best without breaking the bank.

4. Stamps/Scrapbooking/Etc.: Never settle for plain white envelopes again. You can jazz up any envelope or invite with rubber stamps and colored ink. It adds a great detail and is a great way to incorporate your theme. It also keeps cost down because white envelopes are, most of the time, included in boxed, pre-packaged, and/or online stationary orders. So skip the upgrade to colored envelopes and personalize your own.

3. Check the Post Office: stamps are not just for flags, birds, and honoring the dead. You can now personalize stamps for any occasion with your own photos. They are a great way to introduce baby, add flair to your Christmas cards, and say thank you for gifts at your wedding. Other companies offer custom postage stamps as well, so you'll want to be sure to shop around.

Zazzle: an online company that has tons of personalized gifts, stationary, etc. Beware, there are some pricey items on the site, so you'll want to make sure you stay focused and realistic about your budget. They have personalized stamps options as well. So weigh your design options against price to choose your winner.

1. Vistaprint: believe it or not, Vistaprint offers some great deals on custom postcards, mostly for business marketing use, but when you find designs in which you can upload your own photo, voila! Vistaprint runs free specials on postcards, invitations, and more, pretty often. All you have to do is design and pay shipping. I can vouch, they are good quality too.
